A23 Ultra April 2024 Photos

Right . . . how about something to take one’s mind off the weighty matters of life and the various shit-storms raging around the globe?

Yes? Great!

. . . here we go . . .

The above is a picture of a cracked glass pane separating the walking/running track from the weights area at the gym we visit four times a week. I found it interesting enough to photograph.

Depending on the angle and what’s behind it, the cracks reflect different colors, but mostly tan and green since those are the predominant colors around the track.

Unsurprisingly, I chose to play with the image (and some of the images that follow).

I’m under a bit of a self-imposed time constraint, so you won’t see all of the images in the gallery duplicated here, but there is a gallery slideshow at the end along with a link to the gallery for a more leisurely exploration for them who want it.

I should note the glass was particularly difficult to photograph because of reflections from the many lights.

Next, we went out to eat with visiting family and picked a Mexican restaurant we had heard good things about but had not yet visited. Their Chile Rellenos were excellent, and while we rarely eat out, we’ll visit again, especially since they have numerous interesting decorations.

I’ve previously shared images of Robins using the birdbaths. I usually put fresh water in the morning and change it whenever it needs it . . . and when it looks like this, a scant few hours after, it was a basin of limpid fresh water.

Them birds can really get into the dirt, it seems.

Here are a couple of other odd and perhaps not interesting images . . . the first is the remnants of some spinach I’d eaten. The liquid is the water they were cooked in along with some Apple Cider vinegar. The face is fortuitous and I was happy to catch it before I rinsed the plate.

It reminds me a bit of the Moon . . . a playful Moon.

This next image is the wall shadow of a table decoration, along with the reflection coming from the window from one of the faceted glass ornaments we have in the back. When I first saw it, the purple area was nearly a full circle, but in the few moments it took me to bring the phone into action, the changing angle of the Sun had halved the projection.

Although we’re not ready to start filling flower pots, we visited a local nursery, and I snapped photos of a few flowers. They were in bright sun, so the photos are a bit harsh.

These are slightly more purple and darker in real life than in the image (despite the “blue” in their name). As many photographers know, digital sensors and film have difficulty correctly rendering purples. I could have adjusted the colors, but, again, self-imposed time constraints.

Next up, some lawn decorations . . .

On the same day, we had some time to kill before an appointment and decided to drive through one of Marion’s cemeteries. This memorial to fallen soldiers caught my attention . . .

Closer to home — my yard, to be exact — some hosta leaves. We had decent amounts of rain, so they are going gangbusters right now.

You bet I played with these!

Finally, the neighbors across the street have lots of pines, and they produce lots of cone pines that find their way onto my grass. I don’t want them in the grass, and I normally get rid of them, but I got the urge to photograph one of the cones.

Nothing special about that particular pine cone other than I happened to be holding it when the mood struck me.

The photos are not quite as good as I like, so while the originals are in the gallery, I’ll share here some of my extra processing efforts.

And that’s it for now. I might snap more photos before the end of April, and if interesting enough, I’ll post those as well.

This is the LINK to the gallery, and the slideshow link is below.

  1. The reflection photo is outstanding. It’s the type of photo that really holds my interest. Well done. Also, I like the pine cones photos. We had a White Pine in the front yard but it got to large for it’s space. It’s gone now but I do miss the cones it left during the year. i used them in Christmas decorations and gave them to relatives that felt the same way about pine cones as I did. Your last two closeups are really very nice.

    1. Thank you, Ken.

I snapped the cones images in a hurry and only as I processed them did I notice the lack of focus in parts of the images and some blurring.

Really, the phone camera is not great for handling the fine details of a busy texture. I’ll probably start playing with macros in the near future (it’s been a while) and using the Nikon. Those images will likely show the texture of the cones in much better detail.

    1. When one has photographed everything multiple times, one starts to look for different ways to photograph everything again.

Thank you Vijay. BTW, both my browsers block access to your website as unsafe. Something about not supporting HTTPS.

  2. These are fabulous images…(such cool colors, textures, shapes, ETC.) your originals AND those Emilio-fied images! ALL great photos…but I especially enjoy the leaves and flower photos in this group.
What a colorful restaurant! So wonderful the food was good, too!
I see you encountered one of Bob Bones’ relatives.
Wowza! Maybe those robins had enjoyed a mud fight before bathing in your “tub”! HA!
    (((HUGS))) and Happy Monday!!!

    1. Thanks, Carolyn, and yes, very colorful restaurant. Nice people, too.

Robin build their nests using mud to stabilize the grass and twigs they gather and arrange, making the inside of the nest almost smooth. I assume that’s one of the reasons for the muddy water. It could also be from sparrows, as I sometime see them taking ‘dirt baths‘. It could be they then rinse off with some water.

I think about Bones sometimes . . . I hope he has a good home.

For them who didn’t know him, here’s my last memory of Bob Bones:

  3. The sunflower plate is very beautiful! And the color theme of that Mexican restaurant makes it very inviting. Seems like a fun place to dine. Oh, and the pine cone is stunning in all its variations.
