Leanne Cole’s Monochrome Madness 216 — Season(s)

Leanne Cole does a weekly Monochrome Madness post consisting of all monochrome (mostly B&W) photos submitted by users each week. It’s not a contest, but a place for photographers to show their B&W work; anyone can submit photos and it’s also a good place for seeing what can be done when it comes to B&W. 

At the beginning of each month, the submissions are supposed to follow a theme and for next week — Monochrome Madness No. 216 — the theme is Season(s). 

This has put me in a bind of sorts . . . you see, when I do these themed posts, I tend to cycle through multiple choices for what I could offer and — of course — that’s what I did last year when Monochrome Madness had the theme of Season(s) (see THIS post and the associated monochrome madness,  MM 4-15).   In fact, the above is my submission for last year’s Season(s) theme. It done uses up shots I could have used.

Not only did I use up all the decent choices last year, but I also live on an island with no discernable seasons, so I gotz me no new photos. My, oh my . . . what I am to do? Well, if you read the post for last year, you might know . . . 

Here are two pictures I shot today as candidates for Disperser Seasons:

Get it? . . . Disperser Seasons . . . OK, nevermind.

I felt pretty good about those except for one thing . . . there be no actual seasoning going on. You see, I had the camera on a timer and capturing the falling spices was more of a problem than I had imagined. 

Also, I have other things to do. Well, I came up with a solution . . . I would done use up one of them there artistic licenses people talk about. 

I hopped on Photoshop and used the waterdrop brush to create my own salt and pepper brushes.

Now, I grant you, this isn’t all that realistic . . . then again, how would you know?

OK, still not super-great . . . but, that’s not the one I’m planning on using. Nope. It’s the other one. 

The pepper still doesn’t look realistic (there’s no indication of motion) but it’s not bad. Let me be clear, I don’t aim to fool anyone; I will tell them I’ve “doctored” the photo. In fact, the photo will link to this post for the rare viewer that’s interested. 

Also, since I’m already going out on a limb with my interpretation of the theme, I don’t see this additional subterfuge as any more egregious. Here’s the final photo that’ll be submitted.

Monochrome Madness is open to all. As mentioned, it is not a contest; it’s a showcase for people’s adventures in B&W photography. Professional or amateur, all are welcomed. If you have a favorite B&W photo or even a not-so-favorite, consider contributing; you will not be judged, and the photo might provide enjoyment for a pair of eyes or two. Monochrome Madness comes out on Wednesdays in Australia but because they are ahead of us in time zones (about 23 hours or so), it’s actually published here the day before here in the US (Tuesdays). Or it should be.
