Monday’s Toons & Quotes — 063

The Toons are by artists who give permission to share their work (SMBC, Joe Martin, Wrong Hands). The quotes are from the original Jokes of the Week.

Toons

Quotes

Hawaii is not a state of mind but a state of grace.
Paul Theroux

A journey is like a marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.
John Steinbeck

The true traveler finds boredom rather agreeable than painful. It is the symbol of his liberty — his excessive freedom. He accepts his boredom, when it comes, not merely philosophically, but almost with pleasure.
Alduos Huxley

Spirit of place! It is for this we travel; to surprise its subtlety; and where it is a strong and dominant angel, that place, seen once, abides entire in the memory with all its own accidents, its habits, its breath, its name.
Alice Maynell

Traveling is like flirting with life. It’s like saying, “I would stay and love you, but I have to go; this is my station.”
Lisa St. Aubin de Terán

The whole object of travel is not to set foot on a foreign land; it is to at last set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.
G. K. Chesterton

To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive.
Robert Louis Stevenson

Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.
Paul Theroux

Life is hard, but at least it’s short. — E. J. D’Alise (circa 1980)

  1. Got a serious chuckle out of “Boredom” by Huxley. He never made a dull quotable comment.
The bookmarks is such a great analytical exercise…how many college/high schoolers could create good “bookmarks” – or even comprehend these? (As shown by the “wise master” series?)

    1. Thank you, Carolyn.

Willy is a role model for many, I think.

Traveling is often one of those things people speak about as a goal even as they root themselves even more firmly in the familiar.

That might be one of the reasons travel trailers and motor-homes may be so popular . . . you take the familiar with you as you travel.
