Suggested Gun Control Measures

These shouldn’t be objectionable to anyone. For those who might not know, DV stands for Domestic Violence.

The annoying thing is that we’re not talking about any of these (with the possible exception of the age thing). If you watch his previously-linked videos, you can learn why many of the supposed gun control measures pushed by the anti-gun crowd are either ineffective or misguided. Or, both.

And, please, please, please . . . stop saying assault rifle. You just sound ignorant.

Note that he addresses what I often mention . . . you have to suggest stuff that has a chance of passing, otherwise you’re just grandstanding (and showing that you don’t know much about the laws governing the country you live in).

  I’m assuming you’re having me on since I’ve covered this before, but for them who would seriously want an answer:
  
  There is a process you can find at the end of the Constitution. It’s just really difficult. First, you need two-thirds of Congress, meaning, two-thirds in both the House and the Senate approve a negotiated modified wording (there’s even less of a chance of an outright repeal).
  
  After you get it through Congress, you need to get your amendment ratified by three-fourths of the states. That’s at least 38 states. Given the popularity of guns, that’s not going to happen anytime soon.
  
  It’s worth noting it only happened once, with the repeal of Prohibition . . . and the drunks rejoiced.
  
  There’s another option; hold a Constitutional Convention. In that case, two-thirds of state legislatures would need to call for such a convention, and states would write amendments that would then need to be ratified by three-fourths of the states (again, 38 states). That has never happened in the history of the US.
  
  But, more to the point, 28 states currently have Shall-Issue laws for people who want to carry, most of them enacted fairly recently. 14 states don’t require a permit to carry a gun (Constitutional Carry). I’ve touched briefly on why so many people are interested in gun ownership . . . I linked it above.
  
  But, let me ask you: how favorably would you look at your government saying they’re going to rewrite your fundamental laws so that they can improve them? Would you be confident it would be for the better? Would a majority agree?
  
  I could also ask . . . why non just undo Brexit?

    A lot of useful information there.
    In UK we have a government of scoundrels who twist and lie at every turn.
    One day Brexit will be undone because it was a ludicrous act of national self harm. It will be a lot easier than the process you have set out to get things changed in USA.

    There is one other thing that I should mention. I don’t know for sure about the UK, but our Constitution also includes provisions for ex post facto instances:
    
    “Congress is prohibited from passing ex post facto laws by clause 3 of Article I, Section 9 of the United States Constitution. The states are prohibited from passing ex post facto laws by clause 1 of Article I, Section 10. This is one of the relatively few restrictions that the United States Constitution made to both the power of the federal and state governments before the Fourteenth Amendment.”

    Basically, you can’t be retroactively liable for breaking a law that was not in the books when you did something, although later rulings by the Supreme Court limited the application to only criminal matters (a grave error, in my opinion).
    
    The reason I mention this is that it would require more than just changing/abolishing the Second Amendment; it would require changing the way we apply laws.
    
    Also, the reason I mention this is in response to the confiscation issue. Let’s say we could do everything gun control activists want . . . there are still 300M guns in circulation, and you can’t all of a sudden say it’s illegal for you to own something you bought when it was legal.
    
    That’s what happened when the US outlawed private possession of automatic weapons (it’s actually not outlawed; it just costs a lot to get one legally). Anyone who owned an automatic weapon was grandfathered and allowed to keep it. Similarly, unless people wanted to voluntarily turn in their guns, there’s no current path to confiscation.
    
    By the way, the EU has a similar provision in its charter. From the Wikipedia article, the UK (when it was still in the UK) was a signatory to it (but apparently left itself an out). Now that it’s no longer part of the EU, the way I read it, the UK could retroactively make someone a criminal by enacting a law and giving it an effective date that was in the past.
    
    That’s the way I’m reading it, but I could be wrong. Regardless, people wouldn’t stand for it here.
