Looking back at 2018 – January Through March

Looking back at 2018 offers me both an easy post and something that might motivate me for the coming year. 

For the purpose of this review, I’ll be leaving off all of the Project 313 posts since the project has its own mid-project review and will feature an end-of-project review.

That probably means that I won’t have that much to show in this review . . . or so most readers hope.

The year begins with me still enjoying the amazing zoom capability of the Nikon P900. That ship is about four miles away from where I was standing when I snapped that photo.

It also began with me still fascinated by waves . . . 

I was also lucky to witness a new way to fish . . . 

. . . learned from various sea-faring birds; you hover until you see a fish approach the surface and then you dive in after it. 

The hovering is the difficult part to master . . . 

Also in January, I documented the first of many times I would shoot the moon.

Here’s an interesting thing . . . all of the above photos and the next two . . . 

. . . are photos from my January retrospective look at the photos from 2017. Ironic, isn’t it? I’m looking back at 2018 looking back at 2017.

But, they were posted in 2018. All the next photos were posted in 2018 but they might have been shot in previous years. These next few were shot with the capable Samsung Note 8.

Were I to ask much more from this phone, I would just be getting greedy. 

Still early in January, I did a post about random Samsung Note 8 photos. If you ever have the misfortune of walking with me, you’ll suffer me frequently stopping to photograph something that caught my eye.

Here’s another interesting thing . . . I tried to recreate this sunset . . . 

. . . using eggs . . . 

I think I nailed most of the colors but lack a bit on the structure . . . 

Anyway, still not even halfway through January, I did a post explaining how I go about inserting photos into my posts. Not sure it’s interesting, but here’s a photo from that post. 

Oh, yeah . . . we also had a bit of excitement . . . 

A few days after that — and once everyone had changed their underwear — I did another instructional post. This time, explaining how one might go about adding a frame (using Photoshop) to pretty much any photo.

Of course, shortly thereafter Topaz Labs came up with their Digital Frame app and that was that as far as manually adding a frame. 

Near the end of January, I was back with more pictures of waves.

But, you know, still looking for them odd photos here and there . . . 

. . . before, you know, getting back to waves . . . 

The last offering in January was one of Leanne Cole’s Monochrome Madness challenges . . . murals in B&W.

In comparison to what were surprisingly nice B&W renderings, here’s one of the entries in their original color. (big file . . . click with caution)

Oh, yeah . . . the end of January also saw a robot hydrant.

Will February be as weird interesting?

. . . February found me turning over a new leaf . . .

OK, so it wasn’t new and it wasn’t just one . . . 

I also started (finally) documenting the September 2017 Alaska Cruise (something I’ve still not finished) . . . 

Then, I dabbled in sharing some of Hawaiʻi’s native wildlife . . . 

. . . and a relic I’d been eyeing for a while . . . 

. . . which is where I saw what might have been proof of ElBob’s passing through here. 

ElBob and I have parted ways some time ago but I wish him all the best.  

This next photo was posted on the 21st of February but it was snapped on the 14th . . . what are the odds, eh?

On the same post, I also shared a treatment of a spider web . . . 

. . . and a sunset . . . 

. . . which also looked pretty good in B&W.

February was a decent month for capturing surfers . . . 

Also, for reminiscing about my custom built AR-15 type rifle and my multiple 30-rounds magazines (and one 20 rounds magazine).

As soon as we settle somewhere, I’ll get busy rebuilding my arsenal. 

The end of February saw me post a number of cartoons I find funny; here’s a small sample.

. . . and, of course, this one . . . 

March had an odd assortment of posts (and photos).  It began with one of Leanne Cole’s Monochrome Madness contributions . . . 

. . . and I then dove into some of my weird sketches . . . 

. . . and dove into waves . . . well, not literally.

I then launched into a flurry of just odd mish-mash of stuff . . . 

. . . and I wasn’t done . . . 

I know these seem like a crapload of photos but trust me . . . these were just a small sample. 

I’ll stop here for now and give people a chance to catch their breath.
