Project 313 – Post No. 169

Like everyone else, I cannot fully escape the Circus at the Hill (I’m writing this on the 27th of September) . . . see if you can take these two descriptions of what we heard and assign them to the two people who testified.   

1. Powerful and believable testimony.
2. A callous performance designed to mislead by eliciting sympathy. 

I bet most readers immediately assigned each descriptor to the appropriate person almost as a reflex action.

But, which person got assigned to No. 1 and which to No. 2?

The answer, of course, is . . . both . . . neither . . . depends. It depends on who you side with. And here’s the funny part . . . I’m 99.999% sure the circus we watched changed few — if any — minds. It was pretty much a show where each side played to their base.

Well, OK . . . I didn’t watch it; at least not all of it. But I heard about it and caught clips on the national news, the local news, various InterWeb outlets, in mailings I get from people I follow (both “Liberals” and “Conservatives”), and just about everywhere one cared to look. 

I’m reminded of this post I did way back in 2013 . . . The Power of Words. It’s a short post but it contains a video that is worth watching. 

I don’t think people realize to what extent they are manipulated by what they read and watch and listen to. I’m tired of pointing it out but here’s one more thing I can say about it.

It began in subtle ways. A few choice words here, a few choice words there . . . just little nudges, really, and very difficult to spot unless you were on the lookout for them.

That has now changed. Having sufficiently split the electorate into distant and opposite (nonthinking) camps — and secure in the control of their respective audiences — both sides are now blatant in their use of language designed to sway the opinion of mouthbreathers who can’t generate two independent thoughts if their lives depended on it. 

Of course, it’s not their lives on the line, at least not yet. It’s their future.
