Disperser Alitafied

There’s a movie coming up in December . . .

Normally, I’d avoid anything by James Cameron due to suffering massive disappointment with his Titanic and Avatar efforts.

The thing is, both of those were massive hits and are loved by many people . . . people with very different tastes in movies, storytelling, and life in general.

. . . which makes me think this movie will flop because I think I might like it . . .

Also, I don’t think he’s directly involved with the project. More of a supporting role, he has, so I’m thinking there’s hope for the movie.

If you don’t mind a few spoilers THIS is an interesting video to watch. It’s about the Alita Battle Angel manga and thoughts about the movie adaptation.

One of the things I’ve already heard from people — people who I now look at a bit askance — is that they are “creeped out” by the eyes.

Let me get this straight . . . we glorify all manner of excessively large human attributes (asses, chests, genitalia, long nails, big hair, long mustaches and beards, long legs, and on and on) but draw the lines at big eyes . . . on a character that’s an android.

Truthfully, that feature — the impossibly large eyes — intrigued me even before I saw the trailer and did research on the storyline.

Mind you, I’m apprehensive about the execution for the same reasons the guy says in the link that no one clicked . . . namely, our society is all manner of screwed up and shallow and we can’t just take something and present it for what it is.

. . . especially if it comes from another culture; it must first be Westernized.

It goes beyond that, of course . . . look at the slew of remakes that are much less than the originals. For instance, The Magnificent Seven. It was already Westernized but held up somewhat OK . . . but then “they” decided to modernize it and in the process made it dang-near unwatchable action without substance.

But, I digress . . . believe it or not, this post is about me being Alitafied. How?

Well, I dug back to THIS post and pulled this photo:

That’s me from about nine years ago (I’m much uglier now).

I then used PortraitPro Studio 17 to make a few subtle changes.

The problem with the program is that while it can make substantial changes, it’s still constrained by what’s somewhat realistic. That’s about as big as I can make the eyes in that program.

But, I discovered something about Photoshop’s Liquefy filter . . . it recognizes faces and you can do all sorts of things to them without regard for realism.

For instance:

Now, those are big eyes. And, look at that! . . . I even added somewhat of a smile (something I can’t do in real life without looking hideous).

Of course, I don’t quite look alien and android-like yet so back to PortraitPro for a few more subtle changes.

Be truthful now . . .

. . . doesn’t that just make you want to rush out and see Alita when it comes out?

That’s it. This post has ended . . . except for the stuff below.

  1. Those eyes are seriously creepy….think i’ll wait for a little more news about the film before deciding whether i’ll have a look or not. Although i admit that over the years, you have often mentioned a film we hadn’t even heard of that we’ve added to our list of favorites after checking it out.

    1. Here’s a trick you can try . . . first, take progressively grosser photos — general garbage, rotting fruit, animal feces, rotting fruit in animal feces — and once your camera is acclimated, quickly take a selfie and it’ll think it’s a thing of beauty.

      . . . it works for me.

    1. Thanks, Ann.

I got your e-mail and I can imagine a number of phrases mother might have used. Unfortunately, as we never learned the dialect, we can only assume what they mean . . . like “my, what beautiful eyes and elven features!”

  2. It does!!! 😀

HA!!! 😀 “My what BIG eyes you have!!!”

I like the first photo best! ‘Tis way better than the rest!

I think the movie looks like it will be cool!
HUGS and Hope you are having a good and safe weekend!!!

    1. Thanks, Carolyn.

      Wait . . . is that poetry?

I think the movie has potential. The question is whether they can balance a decent plot with all the “cool” CGI. I hope so.

Lane is no more and while overcast, nothing is happening here and we always have great weekends (and most weekdays). Hope you are enjoying the weekend as well.

  3. I like it, and the eyes! Even without sound, which I have currently lost for reasons unknown.
Mind you, I quite enjoyed Titanic and Avatar so maybe I’m on his wavelength.

    1. He’s the producer. The script was written by Rodriguez (sp?) based on Cameron’s notes.

The hopeful bit is that they didn’t write the story as the Manga is already out and well along and has a fan base. The question will be how much they screw with it.

Just to be clear . . . her eyes or my eyes? Her eyes are a bit better but I didn’t put much effort into my transformation. Still, as far as “striking” I’ll put up the totality of my modified visage as a worthy effort.

Finally, don’t read unless you’re curious as I don’t want to spoil your enjoyment:

      Moview 4 – Avatar

I think I’ve made many comments here and there for my opinion of Titanic. As it was way back in 1997 and well before the start of this blog, whatever review I might have written in other venues has been lost to civilization (and a sad thing that is). I would have to watch it again to give it a proper review and That’s. Just. Not. Happening.

As for the sound . . . occasionally, YouTube comes in with the sound muted; check the lower left speaker icon (next to the controls for playing the video).

      1. The sound is for everything. Maybe switching on and off will sort it.
Titanic must have something. My grandkids were besotted with the film and are now besotted with the whole subject, and have exhausted the library’s supply of books on it.

      2. It’s probably just my lack of good taste. It could also be that the plot — such as it was — had to make up for the fact we already knew what was going to happen. The story was . . . opportunistic. Meaning, it set up more for certain visual events and cared little for much else.

Although, Apollo 13 also suffered from the same restriction . . . and yet it did an admirable job of creating suspense even in spots where we knew the outcome. It did it by investing us in the characters. In my opinion — an opinion obviously not shared by many — Titanic failed in that regard and thus there was nothing to support the visuals.

        By the way . . .

      3. It’s admirable the grandkids show an interest in it because of the movie, but that still doesn’t (to my mind) excuse the movie.

We’re having a similar discussion in your last post . . . the question is what artistic license is OK when considering how to best “hook” an audience. Obviously, whatever the “hook”, it won’t work the same on all viewers.

So far, movies with just a visual hook have failed to win me over.

    1. I already wear contacts so I’m not likely to add another pair. Besides, while I’m happy with modifying my photo, I have no desire to change my actual appearance. It took me many years to get this look and I want to enjoy it.

      1. You must be with healthy body and good look, which is fabulous Emilio, since many people are trying to being themselves happy with their body and I am one of them. 🙂 I’d say i am far better than before but I would like to keep or go further 🙂 Let’s stay young!

      2. More like semi-healthy and not-so-good-looking but satisfied with my current status.

As for staying young, that’s got little to do with the body and everything to do with the mind. In that respect, I’m practically a juvenile.

. . . I was always more concerned about my mind than how I looked . . . mostly because I had no choice in the matter of my looks but also because I saw the mind as more important.
