Project 313 – Post No. 117

For them who’ve not heard, the lava is slowing down (if not stopping) and the earthquakes have dropped from multiple hundreds a day to around 50-70 a day. It could be this is a lull and stuff will resume but I think the lava stopped to rest while the two hurricanes heading our way (one after the other) pick up the slack.

It’s that time of year. That means having water and food for about two weeks in case things go South. Actually, if they go South, they will miss the Island so I’m not sure where that saying comes from or how it applies here, but suffice it to say we are prepared. We have Spam. Enough said.

The only concern I have is the possibility of losing power and me not being able to do these posts. I mean, sure, sure, there are concerns for our safety, but that’s nothing compared to not getting these posts out.

I mean, what would my readers do without them? Read the news, or something?

And now, the photo:

I like the flowers and I like this particular treatment.

Anyway, back to the hurricanes. There’s not much indication the hurricanes would severely impact the island, if at all.

On the other hand, they were saying the closest sucker wouldn’t make it to Category 2 and it’s now a solid Category 4 hurricane. They’re counting on it crossing some cooler waters to cut some of its power. We’ll see.

I have my Spam at the ready.

It used to be — and still is to a degree — we both had a strong desire to live by water. Honestly, we would prefer lakes, but oceans are also neat. I hear you can travel all around the world in one.

I’ve seen that joke repeated a few times throughout my years of reading comics. It could be cartoonists get ideas from each other but I think it’s more probably that people trained in looking at things with a slight bent might come up with the same idea.

Certainly, I’ve come up with stuff I thought was original only to find out others worked out the same things I did. Take religion, for instance; I thought I had all manner of originals counterarguments to the nonsense and it turns out many, many others arrived at similar conclusions as I did.

Still, I prefer using others as a double-check to my own thinking as opposed to them doing the thinking for me.

There’s something that seems wrong about appropriating other people’s thinking as one’s own. It would be a bit like if I traced the above cartoon and then changed the tagline to read something else.

I would give you an example but I have this hurricane barreling down on me, so maybe next time.

Some of these posts will likely be longer as the mood hits me, but most will be thus; short, uninteresting, bland, and relentless.

That’s it. This post has ended . . . except for the stuff below.

    1. As a matter of fact, my normal state is to be in a good mood. I’m not sure happy is the correct term because that has a specific definition typically denoting a temporary state of mind ususally associated with flawed perceptions and the temporary forgetfulness of a lot of crappy stuff that populates the world (i.e. being in the moment).

I would propose a slightly different definition — that of being “happy with” — that probably is more applicable. As in I’m generally more “happy with” than “unhappy with” things, in part because I don’t live with high expectations about people and life, in part because I look both ways of the situational scale (things could be better and things could be worse), but mostly because it’s my nature to pretty much live in the moment.

Meaning, it’s not something I specifically work at but that seems to happen naturally for me. So, for instance, I can have fun clipping my nails without pondering humanity going to a very warm place in a woven container.

It also means I can enjoy responding to comments in such a way that assures people will only “scan” the response and neither fully comprehend the message nor prod them into reflecting about their own nature and interactions with others.

      1. Can’t you just say Yes” or “No” ?
4 paragraphs 215 words; one would think you either have verbal diarrhoea or nothing better to do then to waste your time trying to re-educate me in to a lower standard! HA! HUGS))) 😛

  1. Hope the volcanoes and the hurricanes all take a bit of a break, and give you folks a chance to relax. But as long as you have Spam, am sure all will be well.

    1. The volcano is on a break although it’s not an improvement yet for us. It will be if the Vog eases up.

The hurricane is currently passing by south of the island and we’re having a calm day with no rain (at least so far). It’s lightly overcast but fairly bright. Still hot, still humid. A breeze would help.

We’ve had a few hurricane and tropical storms warnings while here and at least at this location, it’s never been anything of significance. In part, that’s because Mauna Loa shields us as most storms come from the southeast. The East and South sides of the island get more of an impact.

    2. They just called off the tropical storm warning. We saw no effect from the storm as of yet. There may be some residual effect from the outer bands in the next day or so.

  2. Oh, gosh! 😦 Best of wishes on all the Mother Nature nastiness. Spam and water…you’ll be fine on survivial. And I hope you all will be safe.

We have fires going on here. Always a summer bummer. Not any as close as the fires last year. But, it’s still just August. Ack. So hoping none come close over the next month.

PHOTO: This is one of your bestest! It captures my eyes! It makes me smile!
CARTOON: I snorted at this one! That would be my luck if I happened to do anything world shattering.
DOODLE: Ooh, la la, Ms. Pus! Even a pencil sketch of you exotic dancing is ooh, la la exciting!

    HUGS!!!

    1. We are fine. We may yet see some rain but the hurricane is already past the island and we’ve had nothing. Even in the areas where high winds were scheduled there wasn’t much.

All for the good, I suppose, but if they continue with these dire warnings that don’t even come close to panning out, people will get complacent and not listen when there’s an actual event dropping down on us.

The flowers are a variety of hibiscus. Specifically:
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibiscus_schizopetalus

The name implies something about the way it looks, I presume.

Yes, this dancing octopus does get around . . . honest, I think it’s actually a starfish as it only has five arms. Don’t tell anyone . . . it would shatter their illusion.

Thanks, Carolyn. And, don’t do anything world shattering . . . it’s the only one we got.

  3. Good thing you moved to Hawaii. You missed the baseball-sized hail that wrecked the Colo Springs zoo. Hmm, hurricanes and volcanoes vs hail, tornadoes, and blizzards …
    Love the photo. Looks 3-D.
You and ElBob. A show all by yourselves. So funny.
    Glad all’s well there.

    1. As it turned out, the hurricane was a non-event here. So, in this case, I take the island.

That particular photo treatment is from the Topaz Glow Plugin and is called “Oil Spill”.

ElBob and I know how to put on a show, alright. I play the part of the guy who can write and has a mastery of the language.
