Project 313 – Post No. 078

Another quick post with a bit of previously-published flash. This one, a writing challenge but one with a twist. The challenge/prompt was a picture of a stone archway. There was no specified theme other than having something to do with the archway.

Beyond

Looking up from her chores, she watched the sun rush to meet the horizon. She stopped working and made her way to the archway. Standing a few feet from the ancient stones, she felt the breeze at her back pick up as it did every night at sunset. She watched the rays of the setting sun illuminate the arch. The thermal currents gathered strength,  the breeze turning into a wind pushing as if wanting her to step through and beyond.

The last rays dimming, she whispered her dreams to the outgoing wind. She whispered of hope, of love, of someday finding the courage to step through the archway, overcoming her fear of the unknown. The wind carried her words, turning them into a murmur rushing out through the archway.

The sun set and the thermal currents subsided to a mere hint of air movement. She turned and walked back to her unfinished chores.

Her words wafted over the hill and into the valley below, losing their individuality as they merged into a melodious sound rising and falling with each gentle wind gust.

The farmer boy stopped, listened, closing his eyes so as to focus solely on his hearing. He swayed gently as if to match the rise and fall of the melody riding on the wind. He thought it both beautiful and sad.

He opened his eyes and looked up at the hill. Someday he would find the courage to search for the source. He resumed his evening chores.

The End

I think it works best with the image of the stone archway but since I don’t own the picture, you’ll just have to imagine it . . . or read the original posting HERE (all the way at the bottom of the post).

And now, the photo:

Project 313 078

That’s the color version of the previously posted B&W arrangement. I like this better but that’s not to say the B&W wasn’t striking in its own way.

Again, I don’t have enough words of praise for the humor offered up by Willy ‘n Ethel.

And yes, that’s another newspaper clipping from many moons ago. I think that’s from 1995 if I’m reading the numbers correctly. It could be 1985 (the numbers are blurred) . . . which is not unreasonable to assume since the strip started in 1981. Again, thinking of all the strips I’ve missed makes me a bit sad. If you want to read about Joe Martin, click HERE. If you want to see his work, he has most a lot of it online HERE. Don’t lose yourself in the funny . . .

Would you believe I now have something like 105 doodles I can share? Some are variations of a single doodle. I’ll usually post the original before posting any of the variations. For instance, this one is titled . . . If Watermelons Invented the Wheel. No particular reason I can think of.

If Watermelons Invented the Wheel

And . . . that’s it

Some of these posts will likely be longer as the mood hits me, but most will be thus; short, uninteresting, bland, and relentless.

You can read about Project 313 HERE.

That’s it. This post has ended . . . except for the stuff below.

  1. Aw, man…that story is so very beautiful! And it brought tears to my eyes!
And it is a reminder for me to push through the fear as I step through the archway…what is beyond might be wonderful and by not being courageous I am missing out!

    PHOTO: Bold storm colors!
CARTOON: HA! (Oh…how come sometimes, on the newspaper cartoon, they spell Willy’s name Willy and sometimes Willie?!
DOODLE: Excellent name! I think the colors of black, pale red/pink and green in the center are very watermelon-y!

    HUGS!!! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Carolyn.

Yeah, I meant to ask Joe Martin about that. The older ones had the Willie version.

The doodle was made before I thought of the name . . . hence the out-of-place baby-blue color which is definitively not in most watermelons I’ve seen.

  2. Emilio strikes again with a powerful quad! Two thumbs up for each of your subjects! And an extra special nod to Willie’s “WAP”!
