Project 313 – Post No. 033

Some people work better and are more productive when under a deadline . . . I’m one such people. I even tend to slack off a bit so as to increase the urgency as deadlines draw near.

That’s not to say that it always works well or even works. If I miscalculate either the timing or my capacity for cramming lots of stuff in a short amount of time, well, then, I’m screwed. That happened a few times when I was working.

It happened once with NaNoWriMo (the first one). I was on vacation for the second half of November. I wasn’t worried but I didn’t front-load the writing and neglected to account for how tired I would be in those last few days of November 2013 (we were visiting Epcot and DisneyWorld).

The thing is, I gave it a push, missed the deadline (50K words by the end of November) and then I lost interest in the novel. I didn’t pick it up again until February and I didn’t finish it until the beginning of June.

Yes, I wrote a lot of other fiction in between . . . because having blown the deadline I was now more interested in exploring other ideas than finishing what I was working on.

In 2014 and 2015, I front-loaded the writing and made sure I completed the 50K words requirements by the end of November . . . but it took longer to add the remainders of those novels and call them complete once the deadline passed. To be sure, I like all three of my novels, so time to completion is not really a factor when it comes to me liking what I do.

One of the reasons I’m not currently doing any fiction writing is that I have no deadlines. I could self-impose deadlines for any number of projects and the way I usually do that is to announce something here on the blog or make someone a promise that I will get it done by a certain time. Of course, I don’t have the motivation to even do that, so, really, it’s not even deadlines . . . it’s willpower, determination, grit.

Those are all things I have, but I apparently packed them when we moved and I’ve yet to come across the box where I stored them.

And now, the photo:

Project 313 033

Not attractive but there’s a story behind it . . . I used to make batches of sugar water for the hummingbird feeders. That’s it. That’s the story. Neat, eh? I’m a writer, you see; I tell engaging tales of love, hate, struggles, victories, and the occasional gallon of sugar water.

I saw s blog post not that long ago and it spoke effusively about another blog where the owner posted many photos of hummingbirds. I sort of chuckled remembering the hundreds and hundreds of hummingbird photos that graced these pages.

I do miss the little dynamos. I miss their fierceness, their aerial combats, their territoriality, and I miss having them light on my hand, unconcerned that I might harm them. I miss filming them from six inches away.

I mentioned before that — despite the supposed numerous species of birds on the island — I don’t see that many birds here. I mean, I see birds, but they are the same three or four species. Yes, interesting, yes, fun to watch. Not so much fun to hear when we lived in the other condo because they would vociferously announce the dawn. Me being someone who goes to bed late, I seldom appreciated their musical interludes seemingly performed right outside my window.

So, here’s confirmation that Willy did not, in fact, procreate. I’m just hoping he can infuse into his nephew the same character strengths he enjoys.

Well, Let me wrap this up as I have to do a few more so that I can get a comfortable margin for the days to come. Here’s the Doodle . . . a continuation of yesterday’s offering only this time it’s Streamers Not In A Bunch.

Streamers Not In A Bunch

And . . . that’s it

Some of these posts will likely be longer as the mood hits me, but most will be thus; short, uninteresting, bland, and relentless.

Didn’t you mean one such person? Or were you just seeing if I’m awake?

    1. I have speech idiosyncracies that one day will be recognized for what they are . . . the way language should have been all along.

But, to answer your question, yes, and the sentence reads as I intended and it also happens to be correct.

      1. You have more excuses than anyone else of my acquaintance; do you do this deliberately to get me going?
Is it because I don’t eat SPAM I delete it? Have you given consideration to getting help?

      2. I must say, you’ve no shortage of your own written idiosyncracies. I’ve read your last two sentences a number of times and I can’t quite make out what you intended. I’m normally pretty good at working out accents and lazy speech, but this time, you got me stumped.

As for excuses . . . they’re not excuses when they are facts. As for getting you going . . . you assume your existence of far greater import to what I say and do than a typical human might assume. In short, I have no intent to “get you going” . . . you do that all on your own.

  2. Oh, I hope you find that box! But, maybe you don’t want to. Ha.

I am a good planner. I like lists. I like getting things done just so I can cross it off the list. And if I do something that is not on the list, I add it to the list just so I can cross it off the list. I work well with deadlines, too. And sometimes I put the “pro” in procrastination. 😀 I’m a mess!!!

PHOTO: HA! and Cool pic! My Dad used to dye his hummingbird water red (that was years ago). I like h-birds! We get them here! I remember you have some GREAT h-bird photos!!! 🙂
CARTOON: I laughed loudly and snorted!
My oldest has an ongoing Scrabble challenge with me. He’s way smarter than me and has a Master’s Degree in Journalism…but for some reason I win a lot when we play. So he says stuff like “After dinner. Scrabble. Just you and me” and he points at me. HA!
DOODLE: AH! The individual streamers before they were bunched together! Cool!

    HUGS!!! 🙂

    1. The first item on my to-do list is to . . . write a to-do list. As for the box, well, I’m sure I’ll stumble on it eventually; I always do.

The red dye is not good for them, but that’s never really explained. It’s sold as attracting hummers because of the color, but it’s more the smell that attracts them to the nectar.

. . . and now you have yet another word for Scrabble. That said, Scrabble is all about vocabulary whereas journalism is writing things out in simple words . . . not really conducive for high Scrabble scores.

      1. OH! I wondered that about the red dye. As my Dad quit doing that and I never asked him why. We’re talking a long time ago…my Dad’s died of cancer almost 25 years ago now.

Be careful stumbling on boxes. Could be a toe-breaker of a stumble! 😮

        HUGS!!! for Almost-Friday!!! 🙂

  3. This ‘persona’ doesn’t like deadlines . . . if I could, I’d dispose of them altogether…
