Project 313 – Post No. 012

The last pre-teens post . . .

As Project 313 ages, I’m struck by how fast time has passed. It seems less than two weeks ago this was barely an idea; a nebulous notion that ignored the associated responsibilities, the effort involved, and the very real cost of time spent doing things.

Still, once embarked on the project, it’s best adjusting one’s attitude and committing to giving it a good go. It is, of course, more difficult as a single poster. Sometimes I envy collaborators as they share in the effort of nurturing their projects along. And yet, there is a certain satisfaction to being solely responsible; be it a failure or a success, or even just an unremarkable and forgettable exercise, Project 313 bears my imprint — my DNA — and will go on long after I am gone . . . for as long as WordPress doesn’t go out of business or life as we know it ends when a rogue app destroys humankind.

And now, the photo:

Project 313 012

That’s a doll I photographed in an antique store in Colorado. I really should get back to visiting more antique stores. There are a few here on the island but they tend to be limited in wares and geared more toward high-end stuff. The ones that aren’t are more like thrift stores and mostly have clothes and modern accouterments as opposed to vintage stuff.

One good thing about this project is that I’m more focused on shooting single objects I might use in these posts. Also, I think I’m pretty much committed to having framed photos for the length of the project.

I plan to keep these posts fairly light in tone and topics . . . but I admit to an increased uneasiness about the world and the basket it’s traveling in on its way to its destination.

Hence the cartoon . . . we’re in trouble, but maybe we can laugh about it as a way to cope.

I keep thinking the world could use my unique and often strewn with brilliant insight commentary . . . but it’s too difficult to maintain the resolve because I ultimately know the world won’t listen. I mean, just read history . . . people never listen; quite the opposite. It’s like telling someone they’re posting too many photos in their blog post or writing too many words, and they get a bee in their chapeau and double down, posting even more photos and publishing increasingly longer posts.

I mean, yes, I totally do that, but I’m a professional; I know that when people say I post too many photos or publish posts that are too long, they don’t mean it.

I titled this next doodle “Icarus” . . . don’t know why; I just felt like it.

Dang! I just realized something! These doodles all need titles. Double-dang! I’ll do that in the future but I now have to go back and title the ones I’ve already used (they will all be collected in one gallery at the end of Project 313).

And . . . that’s it

Some of these posts will likely be longer as the mood hits me, but most will be thus; short, uninteresting, bland, and relentless.

That’s it. This post has ended . . . except for the stuff below.

    1. This is my take:

      1) Look at what happened before.
      2) Hmm . . . we could avoid the misery and suffering of millions if we cooperate, are a bit less greedy, make a few minor sacrifices, and in general care for others at least a small amount.
      3) No, no, let’s instead allow religion, financial, and corporate interests to influence politics to the benefit of a select few and to the detriment of the whole. Denigrate others, promote fear, and point at scapegoats while (whilst, for you Britts) denying our own greed, ineptitude, and selfishness as causal agents for things going to shit.
      4) War.
      5) Rinse. Repeat.

I suppose we could break the cycle, but it certainly doesn’t seem like our heart is in it.

I could also mention reproducing like frenzied rabbits even as we decry the loss of pristine nature, the shortages of clean water, and the pillaging of natural resources. But, no one wants to even hear that argument, let alone talk about it.

I’m trying to keep things light so I’m not going into the details of it all. But, yes . . . we’ve seen it all before. Different particulars, maybe, but the same drivers and likely the same results.

  1. The face of the doll is intriguing. She is ponderful. I have always enjoyed your photos from antique stores and other stores!

Maybe Ethel could give it another toss…at Willy’s head! (laughing face) Ha! Or I can think of one other thing she could do with the bottle. (shocked face)

The story of Icarus has always been a favorite of mine. I’ve even written poetry about him/it. Your Icarus doodle sums up his flight and “landing” in a very sparkly way.

    HUGS!!! 🙂
PS…I am REALLY enjoying your Project 313! I look forward every night to sitting down at the old ‘puter and seeing what you posted! I’m just glad The Government is not in charge of Project 313! HA! (I crack myself up!)

    1. It’s why she caught my eye(s) . . . I’ve used her a few times before and the results have always been to my liking.

Oh, I see whose side you’re on! I do like the many layers of that cartoon. But then, I like most cartoons.

I should have drawn the sun . . . except I named that after I drew it (as I often do with doodles).

Thanks for following along; I suspect I’ll lose the majority of readers and viewership in posts with “Project 313” will eventually drop. Surprisingly, the views are holding at around 20 per post. The likes are averaging about half that.

Still, those are 30% drops from the first few posts. I think views and likes peaked around #5. So, either I’ve already become stale and unimaginative, or people are losing interest. Or, perhaps, a good dose of both.

Regardless, glad you’re enjoying these. I enjoy writing them.

      1. Well, I do like Willy a lot. But, so far, in the cartoons you’ve shared…I gotta’ side with Ethel!

Maybe people see them as great posts to look at and enjoy, but they don’t have any comments to say.

Which I don’t understand, because I always have comments to say. Ha.

  2. Beautiful photo, funny cartoon and, yes, you named that doodle perfectly. BTW, which came first, the name/idea or the doodle?

    1. Truthfully, that was more a representation of a rocket. I was thinking about that guy that shot himself up with a homemade rocket so he could prove the Earth was flat.

So, the name, a more artistic and evocative effort, came after the fact.

Really, all of the doodles are drawn first and there’s seldom intent behind them (unless I’m actually drawing a sketch) before I name them. Same with my original doodles.
