Repetition in Black and White

Please vote in the poll below. I put this here in the hope more people read past the first few lines.

This post is about the selection process for my submission to Leanne Cole Monochrome Madness weekly journey into the world of Black and White Photography. This coming week, there’s a theme: repetition. The theme post will go live this coming Thursday (Wednesday, in North America).

There is no SmugMug gallery for these since all of these already appear in existing galleries. You can, however, click on the photos to get a larger version or click on the gallery therein to view them interactively.

Right; here we go.

So, there is no right or wrong way of interpreting “repetition.” This is not, after all, a contest and therefore nothing is defined.

Once again — me being lazy — the burden is shifted to readers of this blog. Let me present the choices I’ve come up with.

First up . . . The Long Kite:

The Long Kite – landscape
The Long Kite – portrait

Captured at a park in Bellingham, WA. The tub at the man’s feet is where it rose from and where the individual segments neatly stacked when he reeled it in. This is the only one of its kind I’ve personally witnessed.

Next up, in honor of Memorial Day (US Holiday), a sad kind of repetition and one we can’t seem to get away from.

Custer National Cemetary – Little Big Horn NP, MT
Gettysburg Cemetary – Gettysburg, PA

This next candidate might be familiar to many . . .

USAF Academy Chapel – Colorado Springs, CO

A unique structure which will soon be undergoing renovation.

Can’t say much about this; it was part of a macro shoot I did . . .

Turtle Row

This next one is a stretch (you’ll get the pun in a moment) . . . it represents repetition in a roundabout way; it’s a repeating rubber band shooter.

Repeater Rubber Band Gun

Some probably remember this being part of a 2015 Monochrome Madness with Bridges as a theme.

Pattern interrupted – Florida Keys, FL

Keeping with the Florida theme, another two candidates, this time from a pier:

The Right Pier – Navarre, FL
The Left Pier – Navarre, FL

The last offering from Florida is from another Macro session . . .

We Shell – Navarre, FL

Last, but not least, something I feel ducky about . . .

Ducks Not In A Row – Monument, CO

I know, this has been too quick. Nonetheless, it’s time to vote . . .

The voting period runs from the time of publication until 10pm Monday night (Hawaii time; 4am Eastern). At that time, the photo with the most votes will be this week’s contribution. In case of a tie, I will choose randomly from the entries with the most votes.

Thank you, and here’s a non-B&W photo to hold you over until the next post.

Edited To Add: I encourage everyone who is even mildly interested in photography to submit something in Monochrome. The maximum dimension for the file is 1,000 pixels. There’s only a theme at the first of each month. If you’re having difficulty with coming up with something for the theme week, wait until next week and enter whatever you want.

That’s it. This post has ended . . . except for the stuff below.

    1. It’s leading by more than a nose. Probably won’t get more than one or two more votes so it’s the likely winner.

Any specific reason that’s your choice? Or, is it more of a general impression?

      1. “The Long Kite – landscape” and “Pattern interrupted – Florida Keys, FL” are also favorites of mine but the “pier” shot is still my favorite because it’s an unusual viewpoint and it’s depth and contrast edge the others out. In my mind, and based solely on the view my monitor gives, the “pier” is technically a better shot. Again, by a nose.

      2. I was worried about that, the fact that I used different processing for each photo.

I wonder if the processing overshadows the subject and technical aspects of a photo. Perhaps, next time I do this all of them will be processed the same, although it could then be argued processing should be tailored to the particular composition. Perhaps the rankings and ratings of the photos would change with different processing for each one.

Perhaps, it’s just that I’m no good at processing stuff “correctly” and it’s only once in a while I hit the right combination.

        . . . I don’t know . . . it’s all complicated and stuff; maybe I should take some classes or something.

        1. Some say there are no “incorrect” ways to process but I disagree with that. Of course, I’m speaking from my own personal standpoint and processing is certainly personal, and I wouldn’t want to be the one to say one technique is better than another, but I’ve had enough experience and training over the years to at least have an informed opinion. I look at over 200 photos every day (from other photographers) and some are absolutely fantastic and others are just not up to par. Sometimes the difference between a good photo and a not-so-good photo is the way it’s processed. Subject matter and composition are key elements, for sure, but every shot needs “finesse”, for lack of a better word. Some photographers refuse to crop with the idea that they must present everything that was in the viewfinder. Sometimes the full frame is perfect but other times a photo can be vastly improved with a simple crop. Again, this is all personal and based on my own opinions. But I am essentially a technician and this is partly what I look for in a photograph. I started my first blog in 2008 and it hurts my eyes to see some of the stuff I shared back then. I was new to digital and I was very impressed with what could be done to a file with little effort. It’s a learning process and I enjoy watching the progression of other photographers over time.

  1. YAY! we get to vote! I love when you ask us to vote! 🙂
Great pics…ALL of them…so it was hard to vote for only one!
But, the one I voted for…I did so because its repetition is mesmerizing.
The photos of the cemetaries are a repetition I wish we didn’t have. 😦 Those photos are very poignant this Memorial Day weekend.
HA! On the rubber band gun photo being a s-t-r-e-t-c-h! 😀
    HUGS!!! 🙂

      1. I understand. I often go for the pun, the laugh, the sarcasm…and people don’t get it. Or…hmm…just thought of something…maybe they’re ignoring me, so as not to encourage me. 😀 Oh, well, I can ignore them and keep on punning! 😀
        Great song/vid! 🙂

  2. I first voted for the Landscape Kite. But then in rethinking ‘repetition’ and composition, I chose The Left Pier. Quite an excellent photo.

    1. Weird . . . it should not let you vote twice.

I like all the shots, but thought the shells would get the most votes . . . it got none so far. So much for my interpretative skills.

The left pier has a comfortable lead. Unless a tribe of nomadic readers invades my blog, I don’t think any of the others will be catching up. Pretty much all the regular readers have already been here.

      1. I should have written “I first chose the Landscape Kite, but then voted for The Left Pier.” I, too, like all the choices. But to me, the ‘repetitive’ seemed strongest in the pier.

  4. Amazing series… Hard to choose, but did so… 😀 Infinity is certainly related to repetition…. I am thinking of mirrors as I type… But how extraordinary is to see how elements of different sorts can be replicated in such an effective way. Great photographs, dear Dsiperser… All the best to you. 😉
