The Last and The First

No, not some cosmological, spiritual, or deeply significant milestone in either my or the universe’s allotted time span . . .

I’m referring to photography . . . the last photos I took in 2014, and the first photos of snapped in 2015. As usual, you can click on the images for a larger photo (1280 pixel for the largest dimension), or go look at the originals in the SmugMug Gallery HERE.

BUT FIRST . . . a few words. The weather has been a bit squirrely of late. Take the last seven days, for instance . . .

January 2015 weather

If the forecast is even close to accurate, the last half of the month will be in the 60s. But, look at the last week. Beginning a week ago Sunday . . . 31º, Monday and Tuesday sunny and 60º, Wednesday 34º and snow, Thursday 57º and cloudy, Friday 23º and snow, and yesterday and today near 50º and sunny.

Now, the thing with the weather here is that you get beautiful scenery the day after a good snow and freeze, but not when the next day tops 50º. On those days it’s a muddy mess. You also get clouds hanging low and frosting everything up . . . but it’s usually breezy and very cold.

What I am trying to say is that the following are not all that great, and that had I been of a hardier mindset, I would have gone out and snapped wonderful winter vistas. Instead, this is what you get.

December 30th saw me out and about, despite numerous accidents on the roads and hazardous travel conditions. The reason is unimportant, but the fact I was out while it was snowing and miserable let me capture a few scenes .

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

This was a minor and little traveled road a couple of miles from our house. I shot these from the car, window rolled down. A fine snow was falling, but it’s not readily visible unless one looks at the full size photos.

Here’s a panorama of the area. . .

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

. . . and a couple of closeups  . . .

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

The photos look a bit muted because of the falling snow . . . really, the way they should be presented is in Black and White.

Even so, the snow-haze hinders capturing and presenting a clear photo that would take your breath away and make you want to give me money.

It should be obvious the SmugMug album has more photos than shown here, each one both in color and B&W. If you see one in B&W and you want to see the others in color (or vice-versa), go to the gallery.

Here’s a couple of shots I particularly like . . . taken while it was snowing a bit more.

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

The fine blowing snow is visible in the larger view against the background of their bodies. Before anyone feels bad for them, remember they are wearing leather coats.

Here’s the B&W version of the second one . . . work clicking on, in my opinion (even more so, looking in the SmugMug) . . .

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

The interesting thing was that for a two hour period the snow let up, the sun came out . . . and I did not venture out.

I did, however, go out my front door and snapped these last photos of 2014 . . .

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

The very last photo of 2014 is worth sharing in both color and B&W . . . at least I think so.

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

It would not be until January 9th, a few days ago, that I would pick up both Nikon and Samsung phone . . . look at the calendar above; the high for the day was 24º, but that sometime in the 24-hours period.

Through the day it never got above 14, a breeze was blowing, and our neighborhood was immersed in a cloud of freezing fog.

It gave us this . . .

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

Those would be so much better had I went out there with the tripod, set up, taken my time to snap the photos . . . instead, I grabbed the camera, put on shoes, and went out in my short sleeve t-shirt, no hats, no gloves. I can usually stay out there about ten minutes before stuff starts going numb and I head back in.

Now, I also tried similar shots with the phone when I went out to get the mail (I did put on a sweater for that — it’s a long walk in the open to get to the mailbox, and the wind whips around the house something fierce). The phone photos are . . . well, here:

Mind you, the wind was blowing, the light was poor, and I can’t adjust the shutter speed on the phone (at least not that I know if), but still, not awful.

Here’s where my poor skills come into play . . . the aspen . . .

20150109_170430_DIGI

. . . and the aspen up close . . .

20150109_170439_DIGI

Gee, it sure would have been nice getting the foreground in focus; not once, but twice.

Here’s the street view . . .

20150109_170510_DIGI

. . . and patio view . . .

20150109_170951_DIGI

The two best photos from the phone are these, and they are so because they are very close, and the subject was not blowing around, and only if you don’t look at the full size versions in SmugMug.

20150109_170526_DIGI

20150109_170554_DIGI

OK, they are not great, but better than the out-of-focus shots. Still, they look crappy at full resolution on SmugMug . . . just look at the smaller versions here.

So, as we know from many examples, the Nikon shots are better . . .

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

Winter, Snow, Scenery,

All of the photos from the 9th are only presented in B&W both here and in SmugMug. It being gray, cold, and offering very low light, there’s really no advantage to showing the color versions.

So, that’s my less-than-auspicious start to 2015; the year I launch a massive effort into what will be a humongous improvement in the quality of my photos, of my writing, and of my blog posts . . . oh, wait . . . that’s someone else.

Me? I’ll be doing pretty much what I’ve been doing . . . maybe . . . when I get around to it . . . if I’m not eating.

That’s it. This post has ended . . . except for the stuff below.

  1. Ha! You make me laugh! :-D
Love these winter wonderlandy snow and ice photos! Especially the B&W ones! The snow and ice look like vanilla frosting on everything they touch! :-) Beautiful! :-)
Our weather has been squirrely, too! From the 60’s to the low 30’s (for highs)…sun, snow, sun, rain, sun… :-) But I’m not complaining. I like Winter.
    HUGS!!! :-)

As you know, I really like seeing your pictures, even the black and white ones…. although I often find some of the color shots really breathtaking. But some of these shots are incredible…. you can see individual snowflakes so clearly. Really amazing.

I think the phone does a fine job and there seems to be lots of detail on these. I would be very happy if my phone took photos as nice as these. And winter scenes in black and white are really beautiful. For a long time all I shot was black and white and I think that is where I gained the appreciation for it.

The phone does a fine job in good light. The flash sucks, so I don’t use it, hence the low light photos are typically OK for general viewing, but fail the pixel test (that’s when an anal retentive Disperser examines them at maximum magnification, looking to spot flaws).

That’s why I suggest only looking at them here as opposed to really examine them in SmugMug . . . not that most people even go there.

And yes, especially for these, where the sun is absent, B&W works great.

Taking photos in the snow in a t-shirt… you are hardcore. And barmy. I prefer the colour photos of the long distance landscapes, I feel the brown hues add extra interest. But for the snowy photos up close I prefer the starkness of the black n white.

If I go out without a t-shirt, the neighbors swoon . . . simpler to just keep covered up.

Because of the snow acting like fog, neither color nor B&W of the wide angle shots seem that impressive to me. And yes, unless I really crank up the contrast, I can see where the the color ones give something more to look at.

Some of these photos may not be suitable to view in SmugMug, but others are a must! Can’t beat that gorgeous detail on pine trees or textured items. Yes, B&W suits most of them perfectly, but those shots with a hint of color are quite stunning.

The phone photos are not likely as good for detail views. And even some of the Nikon ones are iffy because of the lower light. Still, yes; some are pretty nice for the details.
