There is a photo missing at the end. Did the heron get the fish. I’m guessing it did, they don’t miss too often.

The curse of a small buffer (or, ‘what I miss about my D200).

As for whether it got it or not, it was hard to say. I was shooting at full zoom, and the sun was no more than a sliver on the horizon (hence the grainy photos). While the camera could “see”, I was not that close, and I could no longer distinguish details.

Plus, Melisa had waited patiently for me as I shot more photos than you see here, but once the sun went, there was no point to it as I had one of my slow lenses (18-200 f3.5-5.6).

Love the splash! And the light was perfect. Herons have such intense focus when they hunt… Fascinating bird., Your photographs are beautiful!

Thanks. As I mention above, the light was fading fast, so I did not know I got the splash until later, when we got back to the condo. That’s the first time I got that kind of shot, and it was the very last in the burst I shot in anticipation of the bird striking.

I was very lucky, and happy to be so.

Beautiful sequence! And the lighting, though low, cast the perfect hues and reflections (especially on the splash). Lovely creature and post.
