Second Sunrise – Woodland Park

I live at an altitude of 7,327 feet . . . my drive to work took me down to about 5,970 feet, and then back up to about 8,500 feet.  Depending on the time of year, I could witness two  mountain sunrises. 

One from my house looking out to the Front Range, and then one from work looking to the surrounding hills. 

On this day, because of the sloping angle of the field next to the office where I worked, the sun crested the hills to our East, fought its way through various trees, and spilled on the dormant grass and snow dusting. 

They don’t look like much, even in the larger view, but in person my eyes could see hundreds of tiny reflections from the snow; hundreds of little pieces of sun shining back at me.

The photos show only a few of the brighter ones, but they were there. Although I knew the sparkles would not show up, I knew I wanted to render the pictures thus, and that’s why I shot them.

Here’s one more color version from a different area.

I like the color of dormant grass, and as many pictures as I took throughout the years, I don’t think I ever did it justice.

But I did catch something I saw only once . . . 

Those photos are not altered. I toned them down a bit because the fiery areas were really bright. It looked like lava spilling off the mountain. The scene lasted maybe 2-3 minutes. Literally a few seconds after I snapped the photos, the light changed, the sunlight painting the whole mountain . . . still beautiful, but covering all the East-facing slopes. 

As good as this was, I missed the best parts. I was on my way to get coffee when I noticed the glow out the window. I walked out and stared at it, and it took me a half minute to remember I had a camera, and another minute to get it, modify the settings, and snap the photos . . . and then it was gone. I looked for a repeat every year that I was there. If it repeated, I missed it . . . but not that day.

I’m not sure what caused the focused lighting. I would guess it was a combination of the sun cresting the horizon and clouds letting only a portion of the rays through.

I leave you with a photo that has no place elsewhere . . . This is one of the white boards at work, where we got into the habit of writing down things people said which, even without context, sounded funny (but they were funnier in context). I came across the photo of one of the board (there are other photos lost in the thousands of photos I have), and figured I would share it. 

Yes, that’s actual work below them . . .
