2013 Air Force Academy Graduation Flyover – Vintage Planes

For them who did not know, part of the incompetence-driven budget cuts included the cancellation of the Air Force Thunderbirds Flight Demonstration Team’s events.  That includes the traditional Air Force Academy Graduation flyover. (see my write-ups for 2005 and 2011)

I could go into how little respect I have for politicians.  But, that would be nothing new.

Instead I applaud the private individuals who stepped up . . . er . . . flew in to fill-in.  Mind you, it might not be as spectacular, as awe-inspiring, as visually stunning as having the Thunderbirds hit the afterburners overhead.  But what this fly-over lacks in power and speed, is made up by a big nod to tradition, a hint of nostalgia, and perhaps an extended middle finger to politicians who have lost touch with those they purport to serve.

If not from the fliers, my middle finger is extended in their stead.

So, why am I writing about it?  Because yesterday, while sitting at home, I heard the unmistakable sound of multiple planes flying in formation.  Grabbing the camera, I rush out and  . . . well . . .

That’s six of the planes scheduled to assume the duty of flying over the Air Force Academy 2013 graduating class.  The above turn was just to my north.  Following the turn, they came back south along the front range (the AFA is along the front range), to my west.

They did a number of passes circling to my East, and flying back to my West.  The first pass was the closest, and subsequent passes were much farther, requiring my big lens (and corresponding drop in clarity and sharpness).

I’ll leave you with a few more, and the whole series is in a SmugMug album (HERE).

And there they go . . . the graduation is this Wednesday, and typically the fly-over is between noon and 1:00 p. m.  If you are in the area, take the time to stop (in a safe place), and look up.

As usual, if you are one of them gentle people who appreciate moments spent  contemplating the beauty of flight, and found this to be one such moment, don’t you think you should share it with others in your life?  Others who might appreciate the above, and find a similar escape in it?

. . . and, even if you hated it, and found it a complete waste of time, and would rather walk with your nose buried in your iPhone, you might want to share it anyway; there is always the chance it will make you appear less like . . . you know, you.

      1. Well the part where they canceled the Thunderbirds is just a sign of someone trying to come up with a easy answer to a complicated problem in such a way that they look good to their bosses and get a shot at the next higher shiny rank and possibly a cool medal to add to the fruit salad on their chest.

Hmmmm does that scream disgruntled military too much? I really need to retire.

    1. I’m happy they are doing it, and it is neat to see these planes fly in formation.

And while not taking anything away from them, it’s still sad. Still, it’s not the first time monetary concerns grounded the Thunderbirds.

  1. Oh, wow! What a wonderful sight! Wish I had seen it in person. The pics are great, though.
Can’t the politicians be invited along for the ride, and then be pushed out at a good altitude to try it solo?

    1. I was in a rush, and worried I would not get good shots at the distance I was shooting and with the cloudy skies, so I cranked the ISO and shot well over what I needed.

I would have preferred a little blur on the props, but I don’t mind those shots.

  2. I love these vintage flyovers. We have a tradition here called the Battle of Britain flyover, brought out on ceremonial occasions and for local air shows. We live near Brooklands and every year the unmistakeable drone of a Spitfire’s engine alerts us to the flyover. Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane.

    1. That would be nice to see and photograph.

There are local events which, because I work, are difficult for me to attend.

      But in a few years . . .

    1. Weird . . . I had replied, but the response is not here.

As you likely were already here, the graduation was on the 29th. But by now you know this.

  4. I was glad to read that the private sector stepped up to honor the Air Force graduates. A little better bookkeeping would put the Thunderbirds back in flight . . . just wishful thinking.

On a similar note, mother still misses the joy of taking a ride to Rivolto on Wednesdays, after shopping at the mercato in Mortegliano, to have lunch and watch the Frecce Tricolori practice their aerobatics. She remembers that in the 90’s some political group sent a proposal to cut funds for the Frecce but received so much criticism from other politicians and the public at large that it established the Frecce as one of Italy’s national treasures. And it’s not as if Italy’s financial picture is anywhere near as good as one of your above shots!

    1. Thanks. They were off once or twice before. Eventually they will make their way back, especially since when they fly they bring in money to the local economy.

    1. Thank you. Normally I would have taken a half day off work, and done a proper shoot from a lot closer, but unfortunately my work schedule did not allow it.
