Woodland Park Fox and Deer – 2012

Fox . . . not the Network

The first day back at work, after our return from the Alaska cruise, I saw this nice-looking fox specimen frolicking in the field adjacent to the office where I work.  I was going to say “foxy” but that would attract a different type of viewer.  Ooops!  . . . my visits counter is sure to explode now.

Uncropped foxy beast

I had previously previewed this small series, and people liked the shot.   I just want to show the scale of the actual photo. All the rest are crops.

I think this was the shot I previewed . . .
A different photo, and slightly different crop. I might have previewed this one.

Of course, it could be they were taken so close to each other that there is little difference between them.

This particular fox had been crossing the road when it noticed me. It appeared to have an inordinate amount of interest in what I was doing . . . When it noticed me, it sat and just looked at me.

. . . and at one point it even got up and started to walk toward my position.

I was scared!! Nah, just kidding. I was hoping it would keep going, but it stopped when I moved toward it.  I should have just waited.  Instead, we had a little stare-down . . .

It lost interest, and continued onto the field across from our office.
It lost interest, and continued onto the field across from our office.

We think it has a den there.

I like shots of animals in motion.

They don’t usually turn out, especially when – like in this instance – the subject is in the shade, I’m 100 yards away, and it’s moving at a pretty good clip.  However, I’m relatively happy with these shots.

Sometimes stuff just works
It helped that it kept to the open, and the light improved.
I used this shot for my November 2012 Calendar.

Or it was the next one.  You can see both at the SmugMug gallery HERE.   How did you like that segue?   Clever boy, sometime am I.

A week later, I got paged to grab my camera and come to the front office . . . a small herd of deer was munching their way across the field.

There was this buck, and a bunch of does.

The problem?   It’s early morning, and they are in the shade, with very brightly lit backgrounds.  Not exactly the ideal shooting situation.

That first one was probably the worst of the bunch
Things improved after I exposed for the deer and not worried about the background

Most of the next shots are cropped to minimize the distraction of the bright backdrop.

This is a little better

I particularly like the colors and details of the grass.  I have tried a number of times to get decent shots of that field, all with mixed results.  These shots are not bad for either the deer or the grass.

Difficult for me to pick a favorite (and there are even more in the SmugMug gallery).

. . . I do like me this one . . .
. . . I do like me this one . . .
. . . or maybe this one.

Ah, who am I kidding?!?  I like them all, and flood both my posts and the gallery with so many pictures that people’s brains turn off.  Of course, some people’s brains are already off.

Eventually, they made their way into the full sun.

The lighting is different, and while I was shooting I was happy they finally made it into the sunlight, but as I look at these, I don’t know which I prefer.

Certainly this is nice . . .

But I like the other shots as well.  I’ll add a few more, and then close this off.

The buck made sure to keep between me and the rest of the herd.

“Hey!! Keep up, will-ya!!”
“And what are you looking at?!?”
“Sorry; she’s been in a bad mood ever since a car honked at us, earlier this morning.”
“Oh My FSM!! . . . is that Elvis?!?”
“Ah . . . Kurt Russell. Again.”

And that’s it for this post.  I already gave the link to the SmugMug gallery, so there is no need for me to have it HERE.

Thank you for stopping by.

    1. Thanks . . . I’ve been sitting on these for over two months, and finally got to them.

The deer turned out better than I had expected when I first shot them. The fox, I was pleased with right away.

  1. Amazing photographs, the fox looks such a fine animal , my favourite is the last one when it is in the grass looking at the camera. I like the close-ups of the deer cropping the grass. All great!

  2. Dang! I googled foxy and got this? What a disappointment. But I must say thank you for turning me away from a life of crime, religion, and making me a better person in all other ways.

  3. The first time I saw that fox (another post), I thought it was a painting, and I thought, “He’s got a Bateman.” (Robert Bateman) Of course, I realized then it was one of your photographs. I’ve looked at it several times today, and it is just beautiful. The deer are wonderful, too, but that fox! The detail at that distance is amazing. … (P.S. – Dog picture is very funny. :-))

    1. The “painted” look comes about from looking at it almost at full resolution (the smugmug album can show you full resolution). There is a certain amount of grain associated with the photo because the light was poor. It results in a sort of “fuzziness” when looking at details that makes it appear to be brushed/painted.

It could also be because I tweak the grain a bit to reduce it, “smoothing” some of it out. That can also add a “painted” quality to it.

BUT . . . it’s also fur. If you look at the details surrounding the fox (rocks, grass, etc.) the effect is much less pronounced. That fur is fairly coarse, and I think combined with the grain, contributes to the overall painted feel.

      1. Thanks for the information. I looked in the album at the full resolution and understand what you are saying. What’s your policy on your photos? Do you give permission for use on a computer desktop as background?

        1. Well, it’s kind of complicated. And it’s simple. Let me know (preferably from the SmugMug album – each photo in an album has a position number, or you can just leave a comment on the Smugmug album itself) and I can generate a free wallpaper.

The photos are supposedly free for non-commercial, personal use, however I don’t know of a way to control that rather than protect them. So, if someone wanted to actually use one of my photos, and wanted to grab it from Smugmug, they would find they can’t save it without paying for it.

The photos above are all sized for WordPress, so they are of limited use.

However, if anyone asks me, I will send them JPGs of photos for personal use.

This, of course is limited. I can be sending off 2-300 photos a week.

That’s why I suggest, and I will do a post about it, asking for a particular image to be made into a wallpaper. Those are freely downloadable at the appropriate Smugmug gallery: http://ejdalise.smugmug.com/Free-Wallpapers

There are three gallery, each containing the same photos, and each sized for different screens.

If someone wants a particular size, they can just ask.

          Does that answer the question?

  4. Impressive. Exceptional photos once again.
I am quite envious of the view from your office….all I ever see from mine are squirrels, various birds and cats….oh well, the cats make up for it. 😉
I hope you had a great time in Alaska. Thanks for sharing!

    1. It was a cruise. It was OK. I much prefer our driving tour of Alaska (with a rented RV). That trip was awesome. Unfortunately, that was from the days of film. I have a large folder full of photos I should scan. Although, my photography was nowhere as good back then as what I can accomplish now.

      Thanks.

    1. This is a young one. Unfortunately, I think it’s all that remains of a 6 kits litter, and I’ve not seen the mom around either. The mom was showcased in the post about the fox and coyote, and while she did not look as bad as the parent in this post:
      https://disperser.wordpress.com/2012/02/25/the-fox-and-the-kits-2007/
she did less . . . pristine than the above.

That’s still a pretty young fox, and we often see it “playing” as opposed to going about the business of being an adult.

  5. I love the shots of the fox, they’re just cute creatures it’s just a shame they’re all infested with fleas and what not. There’s one that lives around my village and walks around at night, God knows where he lives in the day time.

    1. To be fair, dogs, cats, and pretty much anyone can get fleas. I don’t think this one has them, or it would be scratching all the time.

The ones around where I live I seldom see. Sometime in the evening, or very early morning, but I do see track overnight. It’s more populated here than where the one above lives (no houses nearby).

      1. Hmm perhaps it’s just the ones around my area that’s infested with fleas. Not that I know for sure, it’s just what I’ve been told as a child so I’ve grown up believing it’s true. Same with hedgehogs.
